I love savory rice, I have never made or even attempted to make savory rice.
I asked my mother once while we were driving somewhere for the recipe and she told me that the onions must be like this and then something else and by the time we actually got out destination I forgot there was even onions in the dish to start with and just thinking about making savory rice scared me silly.
That was until, I got a free McCain’s recipe in the super market for savory rice. I first tried it, just like the recipe said, but I found it to be bland… but have no fear I added some masala and some spices, left out the stock and hey presto we have a lovely, simple, easy and quick savory rice recipe.
Ingredients:
1 x cup raw rice.
1 x tsp tumeric power.
1 x cup mix veg, boiled til cooked, drained and set aside.
1 x onion, sliced.
1 x tsp ginger and garlic paste.
2 x tsp masala.
1/4 x tsp cinnamon powder.
2 x cinnamon sticks.
salt and pepper to season.
Method:
In a bot, boil the rice with water, salt and tumeric till cooked, drain and set aside.
In a wok, heat some oil, add the onions and saute over a medium heat till soft.
Add ginger and garlic and the cinnamon sticks and give it a good stir.
Add the masala, salt and pepper, mix so that the onions are nicely coated.
Add the mix veg and mix so that the mix veg also gets coated with the spices.
Finally add the rice and mix well so everything is nicely combined.
Allow the rice to get hot, before removing from the stove.
Sprinkle the cinnamon powder over the top and top with a blob of margarine.
